Around Halloween Amaryllis bulbs become available online or in most stores like Walmart, Lowes and so many others. You will find single bulbs or kits with a bulb, soil and pot. Now is the fun part, picking out the color you want. Naturally red is the most popular; however, there so many other colors available. Just let you imagination run wild. If you purchased a kit simply pot the bulb in the pot with the soil provided. If there is no soil use a well draining house plant soil. If you purchased a bulb with no kit, choose a 6″ pot with holes in the bottom for drainage. Using a high quality indoor potting mix plant the bulb so that the top of the bulb is above the soil line. Set the pot and bulb in the sink and give it a thorough watering. The amaryllis should then be placed in a sunny window and kept evenly moist, not wet or dry. After the bulb sprouts and is showing a flower bud, it can remain in the window or moved to a location with bright, indirect light. After the amaryllis is done blooming cut the bloom stalk back and allow the flowing green leaves to grow. When the threat of frost is over you can move the amaryllis outdoors. When the foliage dies back, cease watering and place the bulb and pot in the basement or garage for a dormancy period. After 5-8 weeks move the amaryllis into a sunny window, begin watering and soon the amaryllis will begin growing again and reward you with new blooms.
